Trump Replaces DHS Secretary Noem with Sen. Mullin Amid Leadership Concerns
In a Truth Social post, Trump praised Noem for "numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!)" but stated she would transition to Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, a new Western Hemisphere security initiative to be unveiled Saturday in Doral, Florida.

WASHINGTON – President Trump announced Thursday that he is replacing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), citing her service while addressing recent performance issues, including a controversial ad contract and operational challenges.
In a Truth Social post, Trump praised Noem for "numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!)" but stated she would transition to Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, a new Western Hemisphere security initiative to be unveiled Saturday in Doral, Florida. Mullin, a former MMA fighter and advocate for tribal communities, was nominated for his strong congressional record and commitment to border security, stopping migrant crime, and combating illegal drugs. Mullin expressed surprise at the nomination, telling reporters, "I think I need to talk to my wife first," but added he was "super excited" to get started.
Noem's ousting follows scrutiny during this week's congressional hearings, where she faced questions over a taxpayer-funded ad campaign subcontracted to a firm linked to her circle, which Trump reportedly did not approve. Additional concerns included management of mass deportation operations in Minnesota, leading to the replacement of a local Border Patrol commander, and unverified allegations of an affair with former Trump aide Corey Lewandowski. Noem defended her tenure, highlighting a 97% drop in illegal crossings and record drug seizures, while dismissing critics' attacks as "offensive" and "tabloid garbage."
Mullin's confirmation will go before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee; Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar will serve interim. The move underscores Trump's focus on effective enforcement amid ongoing border priorities, with Noem's deportation efforts removing over 670,000 illegal immigrants in 2025.
