Rubio Positions Vance as 2028 GOP Frontrunner, Signals Full Support

A person close to Rubio told Politico, "Marco has been very clear that JD is going to be the Republican nominee if he wants to be. He will do anything he can just to support the vice president in that effort."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has privately conveyed to confidants that Vice President JD Vance stands as the frontrunner for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination if he chooses to run, and that Rubio would offer full backing in such an effort. The assessment, reported by Politico on November 7, 2025, underscores Rubio's view of Vance as the natural heir to President Trump's mantle, amid growing speculation about the post-Trump GOP landscape.

A person close to Rubio told Politico, "Marco has been very clear that JD is going to be the Republican nominee if he wants to be. He will do anything he can just to support the vice president in that effort." Another source familiar with the dynamic described Rubio and Vance as friends, adding, "No one expects Marco to resign from the Cabinet and start taking potshots at the sitting vice president." A third individual close to the White House indicated the prevailing expectation: "JD as [nominee] and Rubio as VP."

Rubio's stance aligns with public signals from the administration. During an October 2025 interview aboard Air Force One, President Trump mused about a Vance-Rubio ticket, stating, "We have JD obviously; the vice president is great. I think Marco is great. I think I'm not sure if anyone would run against us. I think if they ever formed a group it would be unstoppable, I really do." Trump has repeatedly identified Vance and Rubio as his top successors, praising their loyalty and effectiveness.

Vance, 41, has not formally announced plans but has joked about the possibility, telling Pod Force One in late October, "I mentioned it to the secretary in jest, but it feels so premature, because we're still so early." At 54, Rubio would be 57 in 2028, leaving room for a potential vice presidential role followed by a future presidential bid at age 65 after two hypothetical Vance terms.

Recent polling reinforces Vance's position. A September 2025 YouGov survey found 65% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents would consider him in a primary, while a University of New Hampshire poll showed 51% support among likely New Hampshire GOP voters. A Politico poll from October 18-21 indicated 35% of 2024 Trump voters favored Vance for 2028, compared to just 2% for Rubio, with 28% preferring Trump despite term limits and 16% undecided.

James Blair, political director for Trump's 2024 campaign and now deputy chief of staff, emphasized unity: "If you're a Republican that wants to run in 2028 right now, you need to focus on keeping Republicans in power for 2026. I think the number one thing everybody can do is focus on the team and helping their team and not focus on themselves." A former 2016 Rubio campaign staffer told Politico they "wouldn't be surprised" if Rubio joined Vance as running mate, given their aligned visions on foreign policy and economic populism.

Vance's Rust Belt roots and appeal to working-class voters, honed during his 2024 vice presidential run, position him as a bridge between Trump's base and younger conservatives. Rubio, with his hawkish foreign policy and Florida electoral prowess, complements that as a potential partner, echoing the 2016 Trump-Pence balance of populism and establishment appeal.

As the 2026 midterms approach, Rubio's deference signals a disciplined GOP hierarchy, prioritizing continuity under Vance while preserving Rubio's future options. With no formal announcements expected until 2027, the Vance-Rubio alignment reflects a party intent on sustaining Trump's influence without internal fractures.
